Beating the Bounds – Sunday May 4th 2008

Nineteen villagers set out on Sunday morning to walk the approx 12 mile parish boundary of Baydon village led by Mr Kevin Barnes, Chairman of the Parish Council - click here for a map of the full parish boundary route.

One of the walkers Mrs Julie Rolfe has completed the Beating of the Bounds each year since the custom was revised in the year 2000.

The groups kept a steady pace around the northern and western sides of the village. At the 12.30pm lunch break four people left to make their own way home and another couple joined for the second half. This took the walkers along the side of the motorway towards Membury before turning south to complete the last leg of the figure of eight that constitutes the Baydon Parish boundary.

En-route Aidan Maycock aged 10 was ceremoniously held over the Ramsbury / Baydon boundary stone, but he was glad to forgo the traditional “beating”.
